In a new report, they say that business must act on pay and diversity to address a "worrying lack of trust" among the public. The Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee wants workers to have a say on pay. Committee chairman Iain Wright said recent scandals have exposed flaws. The report says faith in corporate governance has been shaken in the wake of scandals such as Sir Philip Green and the BHS pension fund. The MPs want tough new measures to bring boardrooms back into line. Mr Wright said: "Executive pay has been ratcheted up so high that it is impossible to see a credible link between remuneration and performance. "Pay must be reformed and simplified to incentivise decision-making for the long term success of the business and to pursue wider company objectives than share value." The committee has called for businesses to simplify the structure of executive pay and put an end to long-term incentive plans. Their recommendations include workers on the remuneration committees that decide executive pay, and for the chairs of these committees to be expected to resign if shareholders reject their proposed pay policy. The committee has also backed publishing pay ratios annually. Other recommendations include a target that at least half of all new appointments to senior management positions in the FTSE 350 and listed companies should be women, as well as a new voluntary code of governance for private companies.

The ACLU made the argument as part of its lawsuit in federal court in the Northern District of California on behalf of three student visa holders against Trump's March 6 executive order barring travelers from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the United States for 90 days and refugees for four months. The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, says the order discriminates against Muslims. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued instructions to implement Trump's order in a series of four cables to consular officers worldwide last month, which were first revealed by Reuters. The ACLU pointed to language from one of the cables that directs consular officers to assess whether applicants from the six countries "found otherwise eligible" for U.S. visas could still be denied visas based on Trump's order. The ACLU said the guidance "amounts to an unconstitutional amendment of existing law." Chris Christie's vow to halt payments to Amtrak following a second derailment at New York City's Penn Station. The Republican governor said in a letter that he directed New Jersey Transit to withhold funds until an independent inspection verifies that Amtrak's Northeast Corridor is in a state of good repair. NJ Transit says it paid Amtrak $62 million last year for maintenance and repairs. On Thursday, Amtrak CEO Wick Moorman said he understands Christie is frustrated but added that withholding money "is not going to solve any of the problems." Full rail service at Penn Station is expected to be restored Friday morning, four days after Monday's derailment. 
Bentley, who is accused of using state resources for personal use, has denied any wrongdoing and has refused to step down, as demanded by top political leaders. Bentley's troubles began last year when recordings surfaced of him making suggestive remarks to a former senior adviser, Rebekah Mason, before his wife of 50 years filed for divorce in August 2015. Bentley has denied having a physical affair with Mason, who is married. She resigned as questions about the pair's relationship began to dominate Alabama politics. On Wednesday, the Alabama Ethics Commission found that Bentley probably violated ethics and campaign finance laws. The Judiciary Committee's report on Friday accused Bentley of ordering state law enforcement officers to track down copies of an embarrassing recording that suggested an affair with the Mason. It also accused him of retaliating against an official who discovered the relationship. The committee plans to begin its impeachment process on Monday. The panel's process would lead to a recommendation to the full House on whether to impeach.
